Why We Lift - Building Community


There's a misconception out there that Crossfit is harmful to health. What many people do not understand is that Crossfit isn't just another fad or mode of exercise, it is a lifestyle. People from all walks of life can do Crossfit or something very close to it, no matter how old they are or what their physical fitness status is. I'm not suggesting that a person who's never done exercise in their life just jump in and start snatching. That's why it is important to start with a fundamental's or 101 class. Everyone who starts at Tamiami, begins with a 101 class.


Outside of just fitness, Tamiami Fitness is a community center. It's a place where people can come to exercise and let off some steam. Professionals, nurses, teachers, fire fighters and full-time parents can walk in through the doors of Tamiami Fitness and forget their worries for one whole hour. You can choose to socialize with your fellow classmate or secretly compete for a faster time against gym rival. It's completely up to you. Just know that if you don't show up to class, someone will call you out (in a good way). Some people spend more time talking after class, than they do actually working out. In an era with some much social and physical isolation, Tamiami Fitness serves as a place of community wellness. It's the water cooler, the mental health space, the space to interact, to let off steam, and to be one's true self. Tamiami Fitness promotes health, but it also serves a broader function (one often cited by health professionals as important but not paid for by insurance). Tamiami is Health and Wellness space where fitness, medicine, mental health solutions, and self-care come together under one roof.
